“Time” – Paul Cardall

The greater Sandy Spring neighborhood includes the current communities of Brookeville, Olney, Norbeck, Ednor, Brighton, and other communities within a six-mile radius of the original founders meeting house. ZO originally came across this wonderful community through a connection at the  Olney Ballet Theatre (“OBT”).

OBT is committed to cultivating, nourishing and developing classically trained ballet dancers and to afford their dancers on-stage performance opportunities. They are dedicated to broadening and enriching community engagement to discover and support ballet arts. OBT is featured in local events and in special performances in partnership with other local arts organizations — and you know artistic collaboration is the heartbeat of ZO!

We encourage you to take OBT up on its offer to “deepen your love of ballet and come see our beautiful dancers perform” – and we hope to get a chance to see it ourselves on one of these extraordinary occasions.

Olney Ballet Theatre
Artistic Director – Patricia Berrend

Sandy Spring, Maryland city info:

The Sandy Spring community was founded by Quakers who arrived in the early 18th century searching for land where they could grow tobacco and corn. The location of the meeting house helped to define the geographic extent of the greater Sandy Spring neighborhood, comprising those areas from which members of the Meeting could travel to and from the meeting house by horse or carriage in one day, arriving home before sunset.

As America and the whole world continues in its explorations of the deeper investigations, conversations and meanings of “who we are” and “where we’ve come from” — The Sandy Spring Slave Museum & African Art Gallery was founded in 1988 by Dr. Winston Anderson, Ph.D. The Museum focuses on the heritage of Blacks from their origin through the Middle passage, the salvation the Underground Railroad provided, the struggle for civil rights, and their accomplishments in the United States and African Diaspora. In 1998 the Ashton/Sandy Spring Master Plan established The Underground Railroad Experience Trail, to provide more pedestrian trails in the community, preserve the rural landscape and commemorate a part of Sandy Spring and Montgomery County’s history.

The Sandy Spring Museum, a Community-Responsive Museum, connects diverse communities and advances social equity through shared and inspiring experiences of the region’s cultural heritage. Nearby, the Olney Theatre is one of two state theaters in Maryland. It presents professional level dramatic and musical live theatrical productions in its large and modern playhouse on the east edge of town, drawing audiences from across the Washington metropolitan area. Actors who have appeared in performances at the Olney Theater include Helen Hayes, Lillian Gish, Gloria Swanson, Tallulah Bankhead, Paulette Goddard, Eve Arden, Burl Ives, John Carradine, Olivia de Havilland, Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, José Ferrer, Carol Channing, Frances Sternhagen, Laurence Luckenbill, Uzo Aduba, Sir Ian McKellen, Roger Bart, Marcia Gay Harden, Susan Sarandon, Robert Englund and Wilson Jermaine Heredia.

In August 2013, Garrett passed on the guidance of Everett Poetry Night to Duane Kirby Jensen, who continues to build upon the foundation Garrett built.

Monday is the new night for Poetry! The Sister’s Restaurant has been a great venue. It has been part of our refreshed vitality. Unfortunately, we poets have been a bit to rowdy, generating a number of noise complaints. To mitigate this, we have moved to Monday Nights, a night those we have disturbed are closed. The move will allow us to bring the mic back…. Join us. Poetry should be festive and spontaneous.

Osiris Munir is a Fashion Oficionista, writer, and artist!

A former model and dancer minor, Osiris began to explore dance and modeling as a career sidebar. She began dancing with R’Wanda Lewis of the Katherine Dunham group, African Jazz and Dance with Kwaku, Lulu Washington of the Lulu Washington Dance Academy in Los Angeles, and Jimmy Locust, of Locust Dance Academy, who is now a choreographer for Janet Jackson. Munir said that she learned so much about movement from her mother and Aunt who were dance stars in their neighborhood. She talked about the first time that she met Locust. He was an emerging dancer and choreographer and taught classes at the 3rd Street Dance Studios for a short time. “When I met Jimmy, he was so petite; I could not believe that his routines were so tight and so infused with energy. I couldn’t help but want to dance. The music and his choreography made me feel like my whole body was on fire. All I could do was move”.

Later, after applying to the Cunningham and Wilhelmina Modeling agency Munir was told by Nina Blanchard who represented Shari Belafonte at the time that there could only be one Shari. In the following year, Munir traveled to Europe. While there, she was hired as a model for a show in Florence, Italy presented by Marie St. Claire magazine featuring the designs of Yves St. Laurent (YSL). Laurent was among the first designers to embrace black models on the runway. He gave Naomi Campbell her first French Vogue cover and worked with Iman and Katoucha Niane to name a few. Upon returning to Los Angeles she started modeling for designers, Marrika Nakk, Malibu Sports, and award-winning television and costume designer, Marlene Stewart. After exiting the William Morris agency and Universal/MCA, Munir became an independent contractor securing her own clients as she continued developing her talents as an entertainment personality, photojournalist, and abstract expressionist painter.

Osiris has worked as a talent/media rep for the Universoul Circus, working and training with the likes of media greats Pat Tobin and Lilly Lipton of Rogers and Cowan. She is a published author and world-renowned metaphysician. The magazines she has written for include Sepia and BFM.  She now produces and hosts “15 Minutes the Show” a monthly art and culture show produced by Ankh Entertainment. It offers vlog postings on many subjects, hip interviews, and social commentary on the lives and stories of those who make up the creative arts industry.

Paris is the capital and most populous city of France. Since the 17th century, Paris has been one of the world’s major centres of finance, diplomacy, commerce, fashion, gastronomy, and science. For its leading role in the arts and sciences, as well as its very early system of street lighting, in the 19th century it became known as “the City of Light”. Like London, prior to the Second World War, it was also sometimes called the capital of the world. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jelgava is a city in central Latvia about 41 kilometres (25 miles) southwest of Riga (the capital) with 55,972 inhabitants (2019). Before the Second World War, Jelgava had regular, broad streets lined with the mansions of the Baltic German nobility who resided at the former capital of Courland. The old castle (1266) of the dukes of Courland, situated on an island in the river, was destroyed by Duke Biren, who had a spacious palace erected (1738–1772) by Bartolomeo Rastrelli at the bridge across the Lielupe. The future Louis XVIII sojourned in the palace between 1798 and 1800. It now functions as Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies. Other landmarks include the Baroque Church of St. Anne’s Church, the tower of the destroyed Jelgava St. Trinity Church, and two handsome structures: the Villa Medem and the Academia Petrina. Excellent!

Oh Yeah, we can dig it!

“When ZO asked if I might want to become a Sponsor|Curator for Nashville, I was only too happy to do it! I’ve followed the magazine’s efforts to build an artistic community using the arts as a podium for peace — and those are my own goals.

I wish all of you inspiration and safety during these tumultuous times. As the seasons continue to roll around, I pray you will be blessed and would be honored if you would consider picking up my Christmas album, One Silent Night,  as that season of light rolls around.”

COLUMBUS, GA Sponsor — In Celebration of LOUIS CONNELL WILLIAMS

Columbus, Georgia: A riverfront walk and park has been developed in downtown Columbus along the banks of the Chattahoochee River along with luxurious residential condominiums and apartments as part of the city’s revitalization and urban renewal projects.

Columbus is the second-largest city in Georgia (after Atlanta) and lies on the Chattahoochee River directly across from Phenix City, Alabama.

Me Na Wa, a Creek warrior. Library of Congress

For centuries the greater area of Columbus was the traditional territory of the Creek Indians. Most Creeks moved west with the 1826 Treaty of Washington. Those that stayed and made war were forcibly removed in 1836. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, the industries of Columbus expanded their production; becoming one of the most important centers of industry in the Confederacy.

For a closer look at the city’s history and the contributions of its rich African American community, take a historical trek and follow the Black Heritage Trail. Designated as a National Recreation Trail by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 2000, the urban trail features 30 African American heritage landmarks, buildings, and stories of noteworthy events that date back to the 1800s.

Among the must-see stops are: The Ma Rainey House and Blues Museum. Ma Rainey was a pioneering singer known as the “Mother of the Blues” who was born and raised in Columbus before making her way to Chicago, where she signed with Paramount Records. The Liberty Theatre was built in 1924 and was the first black theater in Columbus. It played host to some of the biggest African American musicians in the 20th century, including Louis Armstrong, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, and Columbus’ own Ma Rainey. It rivaled the size and opulence of the “whites only” theater and probably gave the local black community a much-needed respite from the harshness of African American life in the South. It was closed in 1974 when the city outlawed “separate but equal” facilities, but it reopened in 1996 as a regional theater and enrichment center.

The 14th Street Bridge. You would never know the wide, peaceful, well-kept pedestrian bridge connecting Phenix City, Ala., and Columbus was the site of the last land battle of the Civil War. On Easter Sunday, 1865, it was here that the Confederacy took its dying breath. The strife, disunity, and horror of the Civil War finally ended here, and the reunification of our country began, which included African Americans as citizens.

Downtown, also sometimes called “Uptown” is the city’s central business district, and home to multiple historic districts, homes, and churches. Museums include the Columbus Museum – containing artifacts of regional history and works of American art. It is the largest art and history museum in Georgia. The National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus, a 40,000-square-foot (3,700 m²) facility that opened in 1962. It features two original Civil War military vessels, uniforms, equipment, and weapons used by the Union and Confederate navies. The Coca-Cola Space Science Center opened in 1996 for the purpose of public education in science, physics, and astronomy. It includes four flight simulators and a planetarium. The National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center, opened in June 2009, includes displays related to the history of the infantry from the founding of the nation to the present. Its IMAX theatre is used to show related films and special productions. The Bo Bartlett Center is a 18,000+ square foot museum and gallery space. The venue features a permanent display of large-scale paintings by Columbus native Bo Bartlett, as well as rotating exhibitions by renowned contemporary artists. The W.C. Bradley Museum is an 11,000 square foot art museum that features the art collection of the W.C. Bradley Company.

ZO ART CONVERGENCE

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR FOR THIS RICHLY HISTORIC CITY!

The Chattachoochee RiverWalk is an outdoor 15-mile linear park.

The relationship between Columbus and the Chattahoochee predates written history. Spanish explorers told about the falls nearby. The Indians nation’s most extensive trading center was here. Then, in 1828, state legislation set aside 1,200 acres for the town that became Columbus. Steam boats soon were unloading cotton and other products at her busy pier. Romantic ballads were written by passengers who sailed on her lazy paddle-wheelers. Commerce depended on the river with the arrival of the railroad and other means of transportation. More recently, the Chattahoochee became a Mecca for recreation. Lakes created from its lineup of dams attract fishermen from around the world and on weekends the water is filled with boats and skiers. So it was natural for Columbus to come back to the river in 1992. Four years later, that first stretch of riverfront trail was extended to the main post of Fort Benning, giving those who travel on two feet or two wheels a blend of cityscapes and untouched wildlife. The RiverWalk now extends through the campus of TSYS and into the cotton mill town of Bibb City. Join us now on a trip down the Columbus RiverWalk. Take a leisurely stroll through a city’s heritage, a walk that reminds all who come of what was, what is, and what will be.

Sponsor | CURATOR — SHAN OGDEMLI • Art

I believe that there are unseen patterns and structures that exist in multiple dimensions across this universe, and others, surrounding, connecting and influencing everything in the material and non-material realms. My aim as an artist is to capture the essence of those unseen structures and bring them forth into the visible physical world in the form of colors, images and patterns.

Shan Ogdemli • Art and ZO have so many complementary and synchronous creative nexuses, that working together, just naturally segued into an affiliation.  We are honored to have Shan onboard as our Hollywood City Curator (where she currently has a studio) and we know this is just a beginning . . .

About Shan:

“I was born into a creative family in Berkeley, California in 1958 at the height of the beatnik movement. My Mom, an actress, musician, and artist, was the daughter of Sicilian immigrants and my Dad is an architect and inventor of Siberian Tatar heritage, born in Turkey and educated in Italy. My early life was full of turmoil and change as my Mom became very ill and our family packed up and moved to Bangkok, Thailand, where she eventually passed away from her illnesses. Soon after, my Dad met and married an adventurous German-born photographer who became my second Mom. Our family then moved again to Hong Kong and later to Hawaii where we settled and I finished high school.

I went on to attend Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, earning a BFA in Graphic Design with honors and a full scholarship.

My career path has seen much change and evolution, including the roles of graphic designer, illustrator, art director, creative director, licensed artist, and fine artist. Soon after graduation from college, I married Daniel Feldman, and together we founded Ogdemli Feldman Design which over the years grew to a staff of over 10 talented designers and illustrators working under my creative direction. We created logos, packaging, advertising, and catalogs for a variety of industries including children’s entertainment, software, fashion, sports, and music. Highlights of that time included creating logos, tickets, and program illustrations for several Super Bowls and creating a whole collection of fun stationery for Paper Moon Graphics. In 2000 we founded Designs by Shan and started licensing my illustrations onto thousands of products including home furnishings, giftware, stationery, apparel, fabrics, handbags, and cosmetic bags. In 2005 we teamed up with Lifestyle Licensing International to launch our jointly owned lifestyle fashion brand called Pampered Girls, which became an international phenomenon with several stores and boutiques in Japan and products available in many countries around the world.

Around 2010 we scaled down our design and art licensing business to just the 2 of us and moved the studio into our home in the Hollywood Hills, where I could begin to focus on creating my art. Throughout my career I had always painted and created abstract imagery of my visions of the unseen realms of existence. Finally now I am at a point in my life where I can fully focus on bringing my inner visions into physical reality.

SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO —  The name “Santa Fe” means ‘Holy Faith’ in Spanish, and the city’s full name as founded remains La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asís (The Royal Town of the Holy Faith of Saint Francis of Assisi). The City is certainly one of high art and creativity and has been designated as a UNESCO Creative City in Design, Crafts and Folk Art.

Canyon Road has the highest concentration of art galleries in the city, and is a major destination for international collectors, tourists and locals. The Canyon Road galleries showcase a wide array of contemporary, Southwestern, indigenous American, and experimental art, in addition to Russian, Taos Masters, and Native American pieces. Santa Fe contains a lively contemporary art scene, with Meow Wolf as its main art collective. Backed by author George R. R. Martin, Meow Wolf opened an elaborate art installation space, called House of Eternal Return, in 2016. There are many outdoor sculptures and styles run the whole spectrum from Baroque to Post-modern.
