The Sandy Spring community was founded by Quakers who arrived in the early 18th century searching for land where they could grow tobacco and corn. The location of the meeting house helped to define the geographic extent of the greater Sandy Spring neighborhood, comprising those areas from which members of the Meeting could travel to and from the meeting house by horse or carriage in one day, arriving home before sunset.

As America and the whole world continues in its explorations of the deeper investigations, conversations and meanings of “who we are” and “where we’ve come from” — The Sandy Spring Slave Museum & African Art Gallery was founded in 1988 by Dr. Winston Anderson, Ph.D. The Museum focuses on the heritage of Blacks from their origin through the Middle passage, the salvation the Underground Railroad provided, the struggle for civil rights, and their accomplishments in the United States and African Diaspora. In 1998 the Ashton/Sandy Spring Master Plan established The Underground Railroad Experience Trail, to provide more pedestrian trails in the community, preserve the rural landscape and commemorate a part of Sandy Spring and Montgomery County’s history.

The Sandy Spring Museum, a Community-Responsive Museum, connects diverse communities and advances social equity through shared and inspiring experiences of the region’s cultural heritage. Nearby, the Olney Theatre is one of two state theaters in Maryland. It presents professional level dramatic and musical live theatrical productions in its large and modern playhouse on the east edge of town, drawing audiences from across the Washington metropolitan area. Actors who have appeared in performances at the Olney Theater include Helen Hayes, Lillian Gish, Gloria Swanson, Tallulah Bankhead, Paulette Goddard, Eve Arden, Burl Ives, John Carradine, Olivia de Havilland, Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, José Ferrer, Carol Channing, Frances Sternhagen, Laurence Luckenbill, Uzo Aduba, Sir Ian McKellen, Roger Bart, Marcia Gay Harden, Susan Sarandon, Robert Englund and Wilson Jermaine Heredia.
