About the artist:
A local artist from the Heibei province of Handan, Huang Ying is known for her whimsical paintings of the Chinese New Year as well as figures from Chinese myths and history.
HANDAN, China city info:
The city’s name has remained unchanged for over 2,000 years. The word “Han” is taken from the name of the nearby Hanshan Mountain, and “Dan” means ” the terminus of a mountain”, with an added character denoting a city. Together, the name “Handan” means ” the city at the terminus of Mount Han”. The city has many attractions that have inspired idioms. One of these attractions is the “Xuebu Bridge” or “Learning to Walk Bridge”. The bridge obtained its name from a legend about a noble who heard of a particularly elegant way of walking unique to Handan. The noble spent weeks trying to master this style only to fail. Forgetting how to walk, the noble ended up crawling all the way back to his home of Yan. The idiom ” to learn the walk of Hadan” means to learn something difficult so intensely that you forget the basics.

A colorful parade of kites can be seen high above the skies of Heibei province. It is just one of the kite festivals that happen in China throughout the year. Originally invented in the Warring States Period ( 475 – 221 BC) by the philosophers Mozi and Lu Ban, kites, kites have been a dearly-held part of Chinese culture for centuries.

Congtai Park was formed around a three-story pavilion built on a small hill. The ruler of the Kingdom of Zhao, Wuling-Wang ( 赵武灵王 – Zhàowǔlíngwáng) , who ruled from 325 to 299 BC, liked to watch dance and music performances and military parades from this pavilion. The name Congtai translates from Chinese as “the thicket of towers”.
