Appropriated Fashion is a sustainable fashion brand that started in South Africa and is now based in Los Angeles, California — USA. Although the brand is still in the developmental phase, it aims to bring light to social issues such as fast fashion and sustainability. Appropriated was created to share the beauty of African fabrics and textiles while promoting the history and cultural importance of the colors, shapes, and textiles used. The brand sets itself apart by only using recycled clothing and materials to combine modern/western fashion with traditional African styles.

Johannesburg, informally known as Jozi, Joburg, or “The City of Gold”, is the largest city in South Africa, classified as a megacity, and is one of the 100 largest urban areas in the world. Johannesburg is a cultural hub in South Africa and has a wide variety of cultural venues, making it a prominent area for many creative and cultural industries. It was one of the host cities of the official tournament of the 2010 FIFA World Cup – and it hosted the final.
The city was established in 1886 following the discovery of gold on what had been a farm. Recent additions have centered on history museums, such as the Apartheid Museum (with related visits to Constitution Hill) and the Hector Pieterson Museum. There is also a large industry around visiting former townships, such as Soweto and Alexandra.
